Why Coffee
If you look at the maps on this post you will not have to study it closely to understand why working with coffee opens doors to reach the lost. The first map, produced by the International Mission Board, shows where people live who have never received the Gospel, no churches, few if any believers, and few if anyone working to bring the Gospel to them. The second map shows all of the countries in the world where coffee is produced. It is incredible how much the two focuses of the maps overlap one another. To us that is an incredible opportunity. Why? Because we love to see Christ bring life out of death. We love coffee and the coffee industry, and our work can take us to these difficult places and allow us to work with legitimacy and be a benefit to community members who are barely sustaining themselves.
It is true that these places are hard to work in. Often it is illegal and definitely unwelcome to just roll up the old pulpit, erect the revival tent, and start sharing the truth. In these cases coffee opens doors to live and work in farming communities. Our work is not a short term strategy. In fact, it is a very long play. To share the Gospel in places that, for generations have been hostile to the Gospel, to people who have been told Christians are evil and will destroy their way of life ,can seem nothing short of impossible. Workers in these places are surrounded by spiritual enemies at all times. The Kingdom Growers program draws on the Lord’s instruction to the Israelite's exiles, living in captivity in Babylon, as encouragement in these places and as the basis for our work. Jeremiah 29:4-74 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, 5 ‘Build houses and live in them; and plant gardens and eat their produce. 6 Take wives and become the fathers of sons and daughters, and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply there and do not decrease. 7 Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its welfare you will have welfare.’For the Israelite exiles, their captivity was to be long. The Lord instructs them to live, to produce, and to seek the well being of those around them who are different. This passage challenges the Israelites to do a very difficult thing. To seek the welfare of those who were holding them captive. We know we are to pray for the lost and to share the Gospel with them, but often this is hard to do. That is, until you see them struggle to feed their children, until you see the despair that dwells in their homes and lives. When we see these spiritual and physical hardships it becomes easy because the Holy Spirit makes it easy for our hearts to relate, to remember our own lostness. Kingdom Growers uses coffee to engage people, to help people, to serve people, for God to grow His Kingdom. We are asking you to help us. Really, to partner with us by simply making a Gospel intentional purchase when you buy Kingdom Growers Coffee. Our hope is that you make that first purchase for that reason.
