How one mother found empowerment through farming

Carlota tells us about how she dreamed of working her own land and about how difficult it became to work it alone. Before she joined Kingdom Growers, her coffee didn't make enough money to support her family, so her husband had to find work in the United States.
KG: What made you start farming coffee?Carlota: I was first motivated to become a coffee producer because, prior to farming,
I used to pick coffee and I used to think “one day I will have my own farm and I will
pick my own coffee so I don’t have to work somewhere else.” Later, I received a
piece of land from my father, and it motivated me to start farming my own coffee. So, I started. My husband had left as an immigrant to the United States and with the
financial help he sent me, I started working and making the furrows for the coffee. I
had to walk every day. Some days, I didn’t want to do it anymore. I had to walk up
the mountain. I’d return very tired in the evenings, sometimes dark.KG: Was it difficult for your family to be separated like that?
Carlota: Yes. It was very difficult because I had to do the work that my husband was
supposed to do. But, I felt motivated to work in my own farm because, prior to that, I
was living off what my husband could provide. I felt like all I was doing was asking.
Since I started working, I felt empowered to work for myself, my household, my
children, and my father. This story has a happy ending. Read about how joining Kingdom Growers changed Carlota’s family.
